Age-related changes in sleep duration: when it becomes longer

Sleep is an important part of our lives, and its duration changes with age. Studies show that the need for sleep can vary in different periods of life, and some stages are characterized by a longer duration of sleep. This issue is of considerable interest to scientists and doctors, as quality sleep has a direct impact on physical and mental health.

From birth to three years, children need the most sleep. During this period, babies sleep up to 16-18 hours a day. During the first year of life, the child's body is actively developing, and sleep plays a key role in this process. With age, the need for sleep gradually decreases, which is associated with development and adaptation to the external environment.

After three years, the duration of sleep is usually 10-13 hours a day. Children at this age are already more active, their rhythm of life becomes more stable, but quality sleep is still important for their physical and cognitive development. At school age, particularly from 6 to 13 years old, children need 9-11 hours of sleep per day to maintain high productivity and concentration.

It is interesting that from adolescence, from about 14 to 17 years, the need for sleep increases again. Teenagers need 8-10 hours of sleep a day as their bodies and brains go through significant changes. Insufficient sleep during this period can lead to lower academic performance and health problems.

Adults, especially those between the ages of 18 and 64, typically need 7-9 hours of sleep. However, in this age range, the quality of sleep can depend on many factors, such as stress, lifestyle and general health. Many adults do not follow the recommendations, which can negatively affect their well-being.

After age 65, sleep duration may increase again, although it often becomes more fragmented. Older adults may need 7 to 8 hours of sleep, but the quality of that sleep may be poorer due to various medical problems. Proper organization of sleep becomes especially important at this age to maintain health and activity.

Therefore, the duration of sleep changes at different stages of life, and each period has its own characteristics. Understanding these changes can help improve the quality of life and health of people at all stages of their development.
