Nutrition experts have determined how much candy is safe for children during the day to avoid the risks associated with obesity, diabetes and dental problems. According to the recommendations of the American Heart Association, children aged 2 to 18 should not consume more than 25 grams of added sugar per day. This is equivalent to about 6 teaspoons of sugar. Considering that one medium candy can contain from 3 to 5 grams of sugar, the safe norm of sweets is no more than 5-6 small candies per day. However, experts warn: it is worth considering not only candy, but also other sources of added sugar, such as juices, yogurts, pastries and ready-made breakfasts. If the child has already received sugar from other foods, the amount of allowed sweets should be reduced. Pediatricians also advise avoiding regular consumption of lollipops and caramels, as they remain in the mouth for a long time, creating favorable conditions for the development of caries. Instead, it is worth giving preference to chocolate with less sugar or natural sweets, such as dried fruits, although they should also be consumed in limited quantities. Preschool children are most vulnerable to the harmful effects of sugar, because their metabolism is not yet fully formed. An excess of sweets can lead to hyperactivity, sudden mood swings and impaired concentration. Parents are recommended to pay attention to food labels, control the amount of sweets in the diet and form the right attitude towards food in children.
