It is called one of the most beneficial for the heart, and there are good reasons for this. Thiamine performs a number of vital functions in the body. It is involved in the conversion of food into energy, which is especially important for the heart muscle, because the heart works continuously and needs a constant supply of energy. A lack of vitamin B1 can lead to weakness of the heart muscle, which, in turn, increases the risk of developing heart failure. Thiamine deficiency is especially dangerous for the elderly, patients with diabetes, chronic alcoholism or diseases of the gastrointestinal tract. According to medical studies, up to 30% of patients with heart failure have a thiamine deficiency. Its deficiency can manifest itself in the form of rapid heartbeat, shortness of breath and edema - symptoms typical of weakened cardiac activity. It is worth noting that thiamine does not accumulate in the body, since it is water-soluble. Therefore, it must be regularly obtained with food or through supplements. The richest sources of vitamin B1 are whole grains, legumes, meat (especially pork), seeds and nuts. In some cases, a doctor may recommend additional thiamine intake in the form of vitamin complexes. In addition to B1, other vitamins are also important for the heart, in particular vitamins D, C, E and group B in general. However, thiamine is distinguished by the fact that its deficiency has a direct effect on the functioning of the heart and blood vessels. That is why doctors consider it one of the key nutrients in the prevention of cardiovascular diseases. Taking care of your heart starts with daily decisions — a balanced diet, physical activity, avoiding bad habits, and regular consumption of essential vitamins, including B1.
