Products that ruin a smile: which foods provoke caries

Caries is one of the most common dental diseases, which can lead to serious problems with the oral cavity if not treated in time. One of the main reasons for its occurrence is improper nutrition. Some products significantly accelerate the development of caries, creating a favorable environment for bacteria that destroy enamel.

First of all, sweets should be included in the list of "harmful" products. Candies, toffees and caramel are considered especially dangerous. They stay in the mouth for a long time, stick to the teeth and form plaque, which is an ideal environment for the development of cariogenic bacteria. In addition, sweet drinks, such as soda, energy drinks and even fruit juices with a high sugar content, have a similar effect.

Products with a high starch content are another dangerous factor. Chips, white bread, French fries, and breakfast cereals often stick to your teeth and turn into sugar, which also promotes the growth of bacteria. Bacteria in your mouth convert the remaining carbohydrates into acid, which eats away at your enamel.

Acidic foods, such as citrus fruits, vinegar, pickles, and acidic candies, can also be bad for your teeth. Frequent consumption of these foods weakens tooth enamel and makes it more vulnerable to bacteria. If you don’t rinse your mouth or brush your teeth after eating them, you’re at a higher risk of developing cavities.

Dried fruits, while they may seem like a healthy alternative to candy, can also be bad for you. Raisins, dried apricots, and figs have natural sugars and often stick to your teeth, creating a breeding ground for bacteria. Therefore, it’s important to drink water or brush your teeth after eating these foods.

You should also pay attention to how often you snack. The more often a person eats, especially foods with sugar or starch, the more acids are formed in the oral cavity. This increases the risk of cavities, even if the foods do not seem harmful at first glance.

To reduce the risk of cavities, you should limit the consumption of "dangerous" foods, maintain oral hygiene, and visit your dentist regularly. A balanced diet enriched with calcium and vitamin D, along with proper dental care, will help maintain a healthy and beautiful smile for a long time.
