Many people can’t imagine starting or ending their day without a refreshing soak in warm water. However, recent research and opinions from dermatologists are questioning the benefits of this approach, claiming that daily washing can have negative consequences for skin health. Human skin is a complex organ that performs not only a protective function, but also supports the immune system, regulates body temperature, and provides a barrier against bacteria and viruses. On its surface, microorganisms that form the microbiome naturally exist, as well as fats that form a protective film. Frequent washing, especially with soap or aggressive products, washes away this natural protection. The American Academy of Dermatology emphasizes that daily showering is not necessary for most people unless they are physically active, sweat a lot, or work in dirty conditions. Washing too often can lead to dryness, irritation, cracking, and even eczema, especially in people with sensitive or dry skin. Dermatologists advise you to reconsider how often you shower. For many, washing once every two to three days is enough, paying more attention to critical areas - armpits, feet, and the intimate area. It is also recommended to limit the duration of water procedures to 5–10 minutes and avoid hot water, which dries the skin even more. It is also worth paying attention to the products you use during the shower. Choosing mild, pH-neutral gels or fragrance-free soaps will help maintain the natural balance of the skin. After washing, it will not be superfluous to apply a moisturizer to compensate for the loss of moisture. So, while showering is a pleasant and often soothing experience, overdoing it can disrupt the skin’s natural ecosystem. A healthy approach to hygiene is not so much about frequency, but about choosing products wisely and taking into account the individual characteristics of the body.
