Signs of Vitamin B12 Deficiency: The Importance of Early Detection| Здоровье
![]() Signs of Vitamin B12 Deficiency: The Importance of Early Detection Vitamin B12, or cobalamin, is an important water-soluble vitamin that performs a number of critical functions in the body. It is involved in the production of red blood cells, supports the functioning of the nervous system, and contributes to normal metabolism. A deficiency in this vitamin can lead to serious health problems, but symptoms are often subtle and progress gradually. One of the first signs of vitamin B12 deficiency is fatigue and general weakness. When levels of this vitamin decrease, the body may experience a lack of energy, leading to rapid fatigue even from usual physical or mental exertion. This condition can be similar to the symptoms of other diseases, so it is important to pay attention to other signs. Neurological disorders are also characteristic symptoms of vitamin B12 deficiency. These include numbness, tingling in the extremities, coordination problems, and a feeling of weakness in the muscles. Impaired nerve transmission can cause serious problems, including loss of balance and motor function. The next sign is anemia. Vitamin B12 is needed for the production of red blood cells, and a deficiency can lead to megaloblastic anemia, in which blood cells become large and immature, impairing their ability to carry oxygen. This can cause frequent headaches, dizziness, and weakness. Another serious sign of deficiency is cognitive impairment. People with low levels of vitamin B12 may have problems with memory, concentration, and thinking skills. This is often especially noticeable in older people, in whom a deficiency in this vitamin can even contribute to the development of dementia. Finally, a deficiency in vitamin B12 can lead to changes in the skin and mucous membranes. Cracks in the corners of the mouth, yellowing of the skin and pallor, and chronic inflammation of the tongue, known as “geographic tongue,” may occur. These symptoms may be signs that the body is not getting enough of this important vitamin. If you notice any of these symptoms, it is important to see a doctor to have your vitamin B12 levels tested. Early detection of a deficiency and dietary changes or supplementation can help prevent serious health consequences. Ключевые слова:
