When a person can sleep less: Age and body needs

Healthy sleep is an important part of our lives, and its needs can change throughout life. However, the question of what age a person can sleep less is still the subject of many discussions. In this article, we will consider how the need for sleep changes in different periods of life and what factors affect it.

Newborns and infants have a special need for sleep. On average, newborn babies sleep from 14 to 17 hours a day, and a significant part of this time falls on night sleep. This is due to the fact that their body is actively growing and developing, and sleep plays a key role in this process. There are no recommendations for reducing the duration of sleep for infants, as this can negatively affect their health and development.

As you grow older, your need for sleep decreases. Preschool children, as a rule, need from 10 to 13 hours of sleep per day. At this age, sleep helps children learn new skills, supports their physical and mental development. However, even at this age, reducing the duration of sleep should be justified and gradual, so as not to disturb the balance between activity and rest.

In teenagers, the need for sleep also decreases, but this is due to natural changes in their body. Teenagers usually need about 8 to 10 hours of sleep a day. It is important to note that due to hormonal changes and social factors such as school and social life, teenagers may have difficulty following this norm. However, reducing sleep below this limit can lead to problems with concentration and general health.

In adults and the elderly, the need for sleep decreases even more. According to research, adults need 7 to 9 hours of sleep per day. As we age, the quality of our sleep may decline, so it may take longer to recover. Older people often experience sleep problems due to various physiological and psychological factors, such as reduced hormone production and changes in circadian rhythms.

It is important to understand that individual sleep needs may vary depending on personal circumstances and health status. It is recommended to consult a doctor or sleep specialist if there are questions or problems with the quality of sleep at any age. A correct understanding of the need for sleep can significantly affect the general well-being and quality of life.

In general, although the need for sleep may decrease with age, it is important to ensure that the amount of sleep meets individual needs and provides sufficient rest for the body to function effectively.
