What's the difference between perfume and eau de parfum?

Perfume and eau de parfum are two popular types of fragrances that differ primarily in their concentration of essential oils and longevity. These differences determine how vibrantly and long-lasting the scent is on the skin, as well as the situations in which it's most suitable. Perfume, also known as parfum or extrait de parfum, contains the highest concentration of aromatic components—usually between 20 and 40 percent. This gives it a deep, rich scent that develops slowly, evolving over time. A small amount of perfume can leave a powerful trail, and its longevity often reaches 12 hours or more. Perfume is applied pointwise, to the pulse points, as it has a high intensity, while excessive application can make the scent too heavy.

Eau de parfum, or eau de parfum, has a lighter formula. Its concentration of essential oils typically ranges from 12 to 20 percent. This results in a less dense and more versatile fragrance. It's still quite long-lasting—typically 6 to 8 hours—but develops more quickly and is lighter than pure perfume. Eau de parfum can be applied more generously: to skin, hair, and clothing. It's suitable for both everyday wear and special occasions.

The differences between these two types are primarily felt in the way they unfold. Perfume has a pronounced depth: the emphasis is on the base notes, which unfold slowly and velvetily. It lacks the lightness of the top notes, but retains warmth and richness for longer. Eau de parfum, on the other hand, better conveys the freshness and brightness of the opening accords, and its heart unfolds more quickly. This makes it more dynamic and suitable for those who prefer scents that change throughout the day.

The price also differs. Perfume is more expensive because it contains more natural and concentrated ingredients. Eau de parfum is more affordable and is therefore considered the optimal compromise between price, intensity, and longevity. Many brands produce the same fragrance in several concentrations, allowing you to choose a fragrance that suits your lifestyle, climate, and personal preferences.

Thus, the main difference between perfume and eau de parfum is their richness and longevity. Perfume is a deep, dense, and long-lasting scent, suitable for those who appreciate intensity and character. Eau de parfum is more versatile, fresh, and convenient for everyday wear. Both formats can be beautiful, and the choice depends solely on how a person prefers to wear the fragrance and how they want to feel in a space.
