What vitamins and minerals are needed for strong nails?

Healthy and strong nails are not only aesthetically pleasing but also an indicator of overall health. When nails become brittle, peeling, or lose their shine, this may indicate a deficiency of essential vitamins and minerals. Proper nutrition and the right choice of supplements help restore nail structure, accelerate growth, and restore their natural strength.

One of the key nutrients for healthy nails is biotin (vitamin B7). It strengthens keratin, the main building block of the nail plate. With regular biotin intake, nails grow faster, break less, and become smoother. This vitamin is found in eggs, nuts, legumes, and whole grains.

Equally important is vitamin A, which ensures normal cell renewal and maintains tissue elasticity. It prevents nails from drying out and splitting. Vitamin A can be obtained from carrots, fish, butter, and broccoli. However, it's important to maintain a balance, as excess can also be harmful.

B vitamins, especially B6 and B12, are essential for strong and dense nails. They improve circulation, which provides the nail bed with sufficient acid and nutrients. Meat, fish, grains, and leafy vegetables are good sources.

Vitamin C, a powerful antioxidant that participates in collagen synthesis, is also worth mentioning. Collagen ensures the elasticity of the nail structure, meaning its adequate levels directly impact the health of the nail plate. Vitamin C is found in citrus fruits, berries, kiwi, and leafy greens.

Among the micronutrients, calcium deserves special attention. It strengthens nails and prevents brittleness. However, calcium is poorly absorbed without vitamin D, so it's important to combine both. Another critical mineral is iron; a deficiency often leads to thinning nails and the development of grooves. Iron is found in beef, spinach, buckwheat, and apples.

Zinc is an essential micronutrient for tissue regeneration. It accelerates nail growth and helps combat white spots on the nail plate. It can be obtained from seafood, seeds, and nuts. Nails also require magnesium, which is responsible for the proper absorption of proteins and the formation of a strong nail structure.

To maintain healthy nails, it is important to include a varied diet, maintain a balanced vitamin and mineral intake, and, if necessary, use specialized vitamin supplements. Regular nail care, adequate fluid intake, and protecting your hands from harsh substances also play a significant role. Proper nutrition and comprehensive nail care can restore your nails to their natural strength, smoothness, and beautiful appearance.
