Plant-based diet linked to reduced risk of type 2 diabetes, new study finds

A diet rich in plant-based foods may significantly reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, according to a large-scale scientific study published in the journal Diabetologia. The team of researchers studied data from more than 113,000 adults in the United Kingdom to establish a link between dietary patterns and the risk of this common chronic disease.

The study participants were recruited from the UK Biobank, a large-scale biomedical project that covers half a million Britons. Over several years, they filled out online questionnaires, indicating what they had eaten in the previous 24 hours. The data collected allowed scientists to create a clear picture of the consumption of different types of foods - from vegetables, fruits and whole grains to meat and dairy products.

The analysis found that people who ate a mostly plant-based diet — meaning they ate more vegetables, fruits, legumes, nuts, seeds, and whole grains — had a 24 percent lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes than those who ate more animal products and fewer plant foods. This risk reduction was maintained even after controlling for other factors, such as age, body mass index, physical activity, smoking, and alcohol consumption.

The effect was particularly strong among people who were overweight or obese, the group at highest risk for diabetes. For them, a plant-based diet had an even greater protective effect. This suggests that a healthy diet can offset some of the other risk factors.

The researchers emphasize that it doesn’t necessarily mean cutting out meat or other animal products altogether. Simply increasing the amount of plant-based foods in your diet can have a positive impact on your health. It’s about eating a balanced diet that’s high in fiber, vitamins, and antioxidants.

The study adds to a growing body of scientific evidence supporting a plant-based diet as a way to prevent chronic disease. In addition to reducing the risk of diabetes, other studies have linked plant-based diets to improved cardiovascular health, lower blood pressure, and better weight management. Doctors recommend gradually incorporating more plant-based foods into your diet—even small changes can have a big impact in the long run.
