Women's Health and the Power of Walking

A recent study conducted by the American Heart Association confirmed that regular walking significantly reduces the risk of stroke in women. Researchers found that even moderate physical activity, including walking, can be effective in preventing both ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes.

The study involved 39,315 women aged approximately 54 years working in healthcare. For nearly 12 years, they regularly reported their physical activity: walking, running, cycling, aerobics, yoga, and other sports. The researchers also recorded their walking speed, from leisurely to brisk.

The results showed that women who walked at least two hours per week reduced their risk of stroke by 30%. Moreover, a faster pace of at least 4.8 kilometers per hour reduced the risk of ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke by 37%. Walking is particularly effective against hemorrhagic stroke: a fast pace reduces the risk by 68%, while a two-hour weekly walk reduces the risk by 57%.

Researchers note that walking has a positive effect on the cardiovascular system and is an accessible form of moderate physical activity. Lead author of the study, Jakub Settlemare of Harvard Medical School, emphasized that even without special devices, one can assess the appropriate speed: if one can sing while walking, the pace is too slow; if it is difficult to speak, the pace is too fast.

In addition to stroke prevention, regular walking strengthens blood vessels, normalizes blood pressure, and helps maintain overall health. Experts recommend that adults spend at least 150 minutes a week on moderate activity or 75 minutes on vigorous exercise, including walking.

Therefore, the habit of walking is becoming an important element in maintaining women's health. Not only does it reduce the risk of serious illness, but it also improves overall well-being, increases endurance, and helps you maintain an active lifestyle for many years to come.
