Chewing non-mint gum stimulates saliva production, neutralizes acid, and speeds up gastric emptying. Beverage selection is important. Mineral water, decaffeinated tea, and non-citrus juices help reduce acidity. Avoid coffee, carbonated and alcoholic beverages, as well as tomato and citrus juices, which increase acid reflux and irritate the mucous membranes. A typical heartburn-free menu includes a light breakfast with cereal and skim milk, lean meat or fish, fruits, and vegetables. Afternoon snacks and snacks should be moderate and include yogurt, crackers, and fruit. Dinner is best with steamed vegetables, pasta with minimal sauce, and a small amount of protein.
