Weight loss is a concern for many, so even seemingly mundane things attract the attention of experts. One such detail is sugar-free chewing gum, whose effects on the body American researchers decided to study. It turns out that this simple product can play a supporting role in regulating eating.

In a study, a nutritionist from the University of Rhode Island analyzed how chewing gum affects energy expenditure. The experiment involved men and women who chewed gum for a limited time before main meals. This regimen was chosen deliberately, as excessive chewing can have the opposite effect.

The results showed that chewing itself activates the body. Participants' energy expenditure increased by approximately a few percent, which can be significant on a daily basis. Although the figures may not seem impressive, if done regularly, they can contribute to overall balance.

The effect on appetite was particularly interesting. Participants who chewed gum before lunch consumed fewer calories during meals, on average. They also avoided snacking or eating larger portions to replenish their energy levels.

Many subjects also noted subjective effects. Their hunger became less intense, and their anticipation of food became calmer. This may be because chewing partially deceives the receptors and reduces the intensity of the signals that signal the need to eat urgently.

Experts emphasize the importance of moderation. Chewing for no longer than twenty minutes at a time is considered optimal. Longer chewing may cause discomfort and provide no additional benefits.

Therefore, sugar-free gum is not a universal remedy, but it can be a small aid in controlling appetite and energy expenditure. When combined with a sensible diet and an active lifestyle, it can support the pursuit of a more balanced diet.
