Prolonged sitting has become an integral part of modern life. Most people spend hours at their desks, computers, or on the couch, even if they exercise regularly. Research shows that such inactivity causes significant harm to the body, regardless of their level of physical activity during the rest of their time. American experts in cardiovascular disease, obesity, and cancer emphasize that a sedentary lifestyle increases the risk of early death. Dr. Alpa Patel of the American Cancer Society asserts that sitting is one of the most passive activities, capable of negatively impacting health, regardless of a person's other habits. Long-term observations confirm these findings. For example, a 13-year study of 123,000 volunteers found that women who spent more than six hours a day sitting had a 37% higher risk of premature death, while men had an 18% higher risk. These findings persisted even in people without cardiovascular disease, cancer, or lung problems, and regardless of their physical activity level. The mechanisms behind the harmful effects of sitting are not yet fully understood, but it is believed that it disrupts metabolism and slows down processes necessary for maintaining health. Interestingly, the negative changes can begin after just one day of prolonged sitting, the researchers emphasize. Even regular jogging or exercise does not fully offset the effects of prolonged sitting. Professor Peter Katzmarzyk of the Pennington Biomedical Research Center notes that the harm of a sedentary lifestyle is independent of other risk factors, such as smoking or obesity, and requires special attention. Experts recommend simple ways to reduce harm: standing up occasionally, stretching, and taking short walks during lunch breaks.
