Free radicals may prolong life

It has long been believed that free radicals are the main culprits of aging, and that antioxidants, by suppressing their activity, help slow this process. However, recent research suggests a more complex picture, and small amounts of reactive oxygen species may have a positive effect on the body.

Scientists conducted experiments with Caenorhabditis elegans nematodes, in which free radical levels were elevated both naturally and through exposure to certain herbicides. The result was unexpected: these worms lived longer than their normal counterparts. However, the introduction of antioxidants neutralized this effect, and lifespan returned to normal.

Siegfried Hekimi of McGill University believes that free radicals act as signaling molecules in the body's stress responses. At moderate levels, they help activate defense mechanisms and maintain cellular health. This may explain the link between free radicals and aging, which is not as clear-cut as previously thought.

Researchers also link this effect to the benefits of physical exercise. During moderate exercise, the level of reactive oxygen species in the body increases slightly, stimulating protective processes and improving overall health. Similar mechanisms may operate with moderate alcohol consumption, where a small amount of oxidative stress is beneficial rather than harmful.

Despite these benefits, excess free radicals are dangerous. Under severe stress or chronic illness, their activity can damage DNA, accelerate the development of cancer and neurodegenerative diseases, and contribute to wrinkles and skin deterioration.

Thus, this new perspective challenges the popular idea of an "antioxidant pill" that can slow aging. The effect of free radicals depends on the dose and context: moderate amounts can stimulate protective mechanisms and prolong life, while excesses are harmful. This discovery changes the approach to health and anti-aging.
