Parents underestimate the importance of handwashing in children

Many parents regularly forget to remind their children to wash their hands, especially before eating. Research conducted in the UK by The Co-Operative Pharmacy revealed that children's hygiene problems are largely due to adults underestimating its importance.

A survey of 3,000 parents revealed that one in five adults fails to supervise handwashing after using the toilet. Moreover, some parents believe that teaching hygiene is solely the responsibility of the school, not the family. This attitude leads to children failing to develop the habit of following basic hygiene rules.

Furthermore, more than half of parents—57%—don't realize that dirty hands can transmit intestinal infections, influenza, and norovirus. A lack of hygiene knowledge directly increases the risk of illness in children and poses a health threat to the entire family.

John Nuttall, Managing Director of The Co-Operative Pharmacy, emphasizes that many adults don't practice basic hygiene themselves. As a result, children grow up without a clear role model and don't understand the importance of keeping their hands clean.

Psychologists and pediatricians note that teaching children to wash their hands early on can significantly reduce the risk of illness. Simple habits, established from an early age, help instill a sense of responsibility for their own health and the health of others.

It's important for parents to not limit themselves to verbal reminders but also to lead by example. Regular handwashing as a family, discussing hygiene rules, and using visual aids all help children learn the importance of cleanliness and protect themselves from illness.
