How to determine your ideal weight

Many people wonder what their ideal weight is, as it affects their health, well-being, and self-confidence. The World Health Organization notes that excess weight is one of the most common problems facing modern humans. It is especially common among residents of Europe and other affluent countries, where physical activity is reduced and diets are oversaturated with calories.

Before trying to lose those extra pounds, it's important to understand that ideal weight is unique to each individual. It is influenced by age, height, metabolism, bone structure, and lifestyle. People are generally divided into three body types: hyposthenic (thin-boned), normosthenic (average-boned), and hypersthenic (large-boned). You can determine your body type by measuring your wrist circumference: less than 14 cm indicates a fragile frame, 14 to 16.5 cm indicates an average frame, and more than 16.5 cm indicates a broad frame.

The simplest way to roughly calculate a healthy weight is to use the formula "height minus 100" for men and "height minus 105 or 110" for women. However, these values aren't absolute: metabolism slows with age, and slight deviations from these norms are perfectly normal. Furthermore, muscle weighs more than fat, so an athletic person with the same measurements can weigh more but look slimmer.

Doctors believe that a 10% weight gain indicates overweight, and a 20% gain indicates obesity. The latter is especially dangerous, as it puts strain on the heart, blood vessels, and joints. It also increases the risk of diabetes, hypertension, and spinal disorders. Beyond the physical consequences, excess weight also affects the mind—it can lead to self-doubt, insecurity, and anxiety.

Interestingly, a slight excess of weight isn't always harmful. Sometimes a few extra pounds can protect the body during periods of stress or illness. The main thing is to maintain a stable weight and not let it worsen your health.

An optimal weight isn't just a number on the scale, but a state of inner balance. It's important to monitor your diet, exercise, avoid overeating, and learn to accept yourself. After all, health is determined not only by physical indicators but also by how harmonious a person feels in their body.
