Fish and omega-3s help protect children from diabetes

Recent research shows that regular consumption of omega-3 fatty acids, found primarily in fish, can reduce the risk of developing type 1 diabetes in children. This type of diabetes is an autoimmune disease that leads to the destruction of the pancreatic cells responsible for producing insulin.

The study involved 1,770 children at high risk of developing diabetes. Scientists from the University of Colorado found that children who received omega-3s had a nearly 55 percent lower risk of developing the disease compared to children who did not receive these substances.

Doctors attribute the effect of omega-3s and omega-6s to their role in regulating the immune system. They help develop the body's defense mechanisms and prevent the autoimmune destruction of insulin-producing cells.

Introducing omega-3s into the diet early is especially important. The earlier a child receives sufficient amounts of these fatty acids, the greater their protection against the autoimmune processes associated with diabetes.

Besides fish, omega-3s are found in some plant foods, such as flaxseed and walnuts. However, experts emphasize that fish is the most effective source, as it contains an easily digestible form of these fatty acids.

Doctors advise parents to include fish in their children's diet at least twice a week. This simple step can significantly strengthen the immune system and reduce the risk of developing serious illnesses that can affect a child's life.
