Natural Defenses for Teeth Against Plaque

The human oral cavity is an entire ecosystem where millions of bacteria interact daily. These include not only harmful but also beneficial microorganisms that play a vital role in maintaining healthy teeth and gums. One such natural defender is the streptococcus salivarius, which can prevent plaque formation and slow the progression of cavities.

Japanese scientists from the National Institute of Infectious Diseases in Tokyo discovered that this type of bacteria produces enzymes that act similarly to components in toothpaste. They not only clean the surface of the teeth but also inhibit the proliferation of pathogenic microorganisms. This reduces the risk of tartar formation and oral inflammation.

The researchers paid special attention to an enzyme called FruA. It is capable of breaking down plaque without damaging tooth enamel. Moreover, the effectiveness of this enzyme was found to increase in the presence of sucrose—the more sugar in the mouth, the more active the protective mechanism. This may explain why some people, even with a sweet tooth, maintain healthy teeth.

Interestingly, similar enzymes have long been used in industry. For example, an enzyme produced by the fungus *Aspergillus niger* is used in some cleaning products and dental supplements. However, researchers note that natural enzymes produced by oral bacteria are gentler and safer.

The balance of microflora in the mouth is believed to play a crucial role in the prevention of dental disease. When beneficial bacteria, such as *Streptococcus salivarius*, predominate, they suppress the growth of harmful species—for example, *Streptococcus mutans*, which is responsible for the formation of tartar and cavities. Thus, maintaining a healthy microflora may offer an alternative to the frequent use of harsh hygiene products.

Scientists believe that further study of natural oral bacteria will lead to the development of new medications and probiotics to strengthen teeth. Perhaps in the future, oral care will be less mechanical and more biological—based on maintaining the natural balance between microorganisms that protect our health better than any chemical compounds.
