Melatonin – Why is it Important?

Melatonin is a hormone naturally produced by our bodies, often referred to as the "sleep hormone." It regulates our circadian rhythms – the internal biological clock that controls when we should be awake and when we should rest. Most melatonin is produced during the dark hours of the day, so its levels rise in the evening, helping us relax and fall asleep, and decline in the morning, allowing us to wake up and feel refreshed.

However, melatonin's role is not limited to sleep regulation. This hormone also has antioxidant properties, protecting the body's cells from damage and premature aging. It supports the immune system, helping the body more effectively fight viruses and bacteria. Melatonin also helps regulate hormonal balance, which is especially important during periods of stress, jet lag, or an irregular daily routine.

Melatonin is often used as a supplement for insomnia or sleep disorders. It helps gently normalize the sleep-wake cycle without addiction, which is why it's often recommended for people working night shifts, travelers experiencing jet lag, or those experiencing stress and overwork. It's important to remember that melatonin supplements are not a sleeping pill, but a means of helping the body return to its natural rhythm.

Sometimes melatonin levels decrease due to constant exposure to bright light, especially from smartphone and computer screens, an irregular daily routine, lack of sunlight, or age-related changes. In such cases, normalizing your routine, reducing your use of gadgets before bed, and establishing restful sleep habits can significantly improve sleep quality.

Despite its benefits, melatonin supplementation should be taken with caution. It can affect hormonal balance, so it's advisable to consult a specialist before using it, especially if you have chronic illnesses or are taking other medications. The correct dosage and regimen can help improve sleep, reduce stress, increase concentration, and enhance overall well-being.

Melatonin is an essential part of our natural regeneration system. It helps the body adapt to the rhythm of life, protects cells, and maintains health. By maintaining normal melatonin levels, we not only maintain quality sleep but also overall well-being.
