Deep Vein Thrombosis: Signs and Symptoms to Know

Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a serious condition in which blood clots (thrombi) form in the deep veins. This can lead to a number of dangerous complications, including pulmonary embolism, when a blood clot travels to the lungs and blocks blood flow. Knowing the main symptoms and early signs of DVT is important for timely diagnosis and treatment.

One of the most common symptoms of DVT is swelling. It usually occurs in one leg and may be accompanied by a feeling of heaviness or pain. The swelling can be so severe that it can limit mobility. At the same time, the area of swelling often becomes warm to the touch and may change its color to red or bluish.

Another important symptom is pain in the area of the deep veins, particularly in the calf or thigh. The pain can vary in nature: from mild discomfort to sharp, throbbing pain. The pain often increases with movement, and when pressing on the affected vein, severe pain may occur. This symptom is an important signal to seek medical attention.

In many cases, skin changes may also occur. The affected area may become red, hot to the touch, and swollen. Sometimes, protruding veins appear, which appear due to the flow of blood to the damaged areas. These changes may be mild, but as the disease progresses, they may become more pronounced.

Impaired blood circulation due to thrombosis can lead to a feeling of heaviness in the limb. This symptom often worsens after a long stay in one position, for example, while sitting or standing. The feeling of heaviness may not be very intense, but over time its intensity may increase, indicating a worsening of the condition.

Often, DVT is accompanied by an increase in body temperature, which is the body's reaction to inflammation of the veins. The increase in temperature may be slight, but in some cases it can reach 38 degrees Celsius. This may be an additional symptom to look out for.

One of the most dangerous complications of DVT is pulmonary embolism, when part of a blood clot breaks off and travels to the lungs. This can cause sudden chest pain, shortness of breath, tachycardia (rapid heartbeat), and even death. If you experience any of these symptoms, seek immediate medical attention.

Deep vein thrombosis is a serious condition, and recognizing its symptoms early can prevent serious complications. If you suspect you have DVT, see your doctor right away. The sooner you start treatment, the lower the risk of complications and the better your prognosis.
