Everything you need to know about high fever: the most common medical mistakes

An elevated body temperature often causes panic. Patients and relatives begin to act impulsively - they take antipyretics, wrap themselves in blankets, wrap themselves up. However, as doctors note, mistakes that can complicate the situation more often than they really help are more common. Below are the six most common myths and incorrect actions that doctors encounter.

  1. The temperature must be brought down

Many people believe that every temperature should be brought down immediately. Doctors emphasize: the temperature is the body's natural mechanism for fighting infection, so it should not always be extinguished. If it is within moderate limits (for example, up to 38 ° C–38.5 ° C) and the patient tolerates the condition normally, it may be advisable to let the body work. However, when the temperature rises above 39 ° C or symptoms of complications appear, then intervention is really necessary.

  1. The more drugs, the better

Another common mistake is to use several antipyretics at once or combine them at will. Doctors emphasize: alternating drugs or self-medication without control can lead to side effects. It is better to choose one remedy, adhere to the recommended dose and strictly monitor your well-being.

  1. Wrapping and wrapping help

Many advise to “sweat”, wrap yourself up, lie under a blanket and drink warm tea. In fact, such methods can only increase body temperature and worsen the condition. It is better to ensure ventilation of the room, a comfortable temperature that is not too high, light clothing and moderate cooling (for example, a slightly cool wet napkin on the forehead or wrists).

  1. Rubbing with alcohol or cold water is a good way

This is one of the riskiest practices. Rubbing or wiping with alcohol solutions often causes spasm of superficial blood vessels, which slows down heat exchange and can lead to hypothermia of internal organs - especially in children. Cold water should also be used with caution: sudden cooling can be a shock to the body.

  1. During a fever, you should completely stop eating

Some are convinced that at a high temperature the body "does not work" and does not digest food, so it is better to starve. But doctors point out: it is important to maintain energy balance, drink enough fluids, eat light but nutritious food - soup, porridge, fruit. Complete refusal of food can weaken the body in the fight against infection.

  1. The most important thing is not to consult a doctor if it is "just a temperature"

It is a mistake to believe that only an extremely high temperature or obvious complications require medical attention. However, it is timely consultation with a doctor that can prevent the development of serious consequences. This is especially true for children, the elderly, and people with chronic diseases: if the temperature stays above 38.5 °C for more than 48 hours, is accompanied by convulsions, rash, severe headache, or respiratory failure, immediately consult a specialist.
