The optimal diet to prevent protein deficiency: what you need to know| Здоровье
The optimal diet to prevent protein deficiency: what you need to know Protein is one of the key macronutrients necessary for the normal functioning of the body. It is involved in the formation of muscles, enzymes, hormones, and also supports the immune system. However, even with a varied diet, some people may experience protein deficiency. This most often happens with an unbalanced diet, strict diets or a vegan lifestyle without proper compensation with plant-based protein sources. To avoid protein deficiency, an adult should consume at least 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight daily. For example, a person weighing 70 kg needs approximately 56 grams of protein per day. For active people, athletes, pregnant women or the elderly, this norm can increase to 1.2–2.0 g/kg. The main sources of protein are products of animal origin - meat, fish, eggs, dairy products. They contain a full range of essential amino acids that the body cannot synthesize on its own. However, some plant-based protein alternatives are also high-quality protein: legumes (lentils, beans, chickpeas), soy products (tofu, tempeh), seeds (pumpkin, sunflower), nuts and whole grains. For vegetarians and vegans, it is especially important to combine different plant-based protein sources throughout the day to get a complete amino acid profile. For example, combining rice and legumes or bread with peanut butter provides the body with all the necessary amino acids. It is also worth paying attention to the number of calories consumed: if they are lacking, the body begins to use protein as a source of energy, which reduces its availability for other functions. Signs of protein deficiency can be loss of muscle mass, weakness, brittle hair and nails, poor wound healing, frequent infections, and swelling. With prolonged protein starvation, serious disorders in the functioning of organs and systems, in particular the liver and heart, are possible. Therefore, it is important not only to monitor the quantity of protein, but also its quality. When creating a diet, it is advisable to include protein in every meal. For example, for breakfast - yogurt or eggs, for lunch - chicken fillet or beans, for dinner - fish or tofu. This approach helps maintain a stable level of amino acids in the blood throughout the day, improves metabolism and promotes tissue repair.
