Vitamin B3: Importance for the Body and Foods Where It Is Most Available

Vitamin B3, or niacin, plays a key role in the functioning of the human body. This water-soluble vitamin belongs to the B group and is necessary for converting food into energy, normal functioning of the nervous system, maintaining healthy skin and the digestive system. In addition, it is involved in the synthesis of hormones and enzymes that regulate many processes in the body.

One of the main functions of vitamin B3 is participation in metabolism, in particular in the production of energy from carbohydrates, fats and proteins. Without sufficient niacin, these processes slow down, which can lead to fatigue, reduced immunity and even mental health disorders. The body can partially synthesize niacin from the amino acid tryptophan, but this is usually not enough to fully cover the daily requirement.

The daily intake of vitamin B3 depends on age, gender and physiological condition. For adult men, the recommended dose is approximately 16 mg per day, and for women - about 14 mg. Increased need for niacin may occur during periods of active growth, pregnancy, breastfeeding, or in the presence of chronic diseases.

A deficiency of vitamin B3 can lead to a serious disease - pellagra. The main symptoms of pellagra include dermatitis, diarrhea, and dementia. In severe cases, if left untreated, the disease can be fatal. That is why it is important to follow a balanced diet that includes sources of niacin.

The main foods rich in vitamin B3 include meat (especially beef, chicken, and pork), fish (tuna, salmon), liver, and plant products such as peanuts, sunflower seeds, avocados, mushrooms, and whole grains. Niacin is also often added to fortified foods such as bread and cereals.

Regular consumption of foods rich in niacin helps maintain energy balance, skin health, and the normal functioning of the cardiovascular and nervous systems. Thus, vitamin B3 is not only about nutrition, but also about overall well-being and the prevention of many diseases.
