What to Avoid When You Have a Sore Throat: Tips to Relieve Symptoms

A sore throat is one of the most common symptoms of a cold, flu, or bacterial infection. During this time, your throat becomes especially sensitive, so nutrition plays an important role in your recovery process. Some foods can only make things worse by causing irritation, swelling, or dryness in your throat. To reduce discomfort, it’s important to know what to temporarily eliminate from your menu.

First, avoid hard and crunchy foods, such as chips, crackers, seeds, nuts, or even fresh bread crust. They can scratch an irritated throat, increasing pain and causing micro-damage to the mucous membrane. Such micro-traumas can, in turn, become a gateway for additional infections.

Spicy foods are another irritant to avoid. Foods that contain chili peppers, horseradish, mustard, or other spices can cause burning and further irritation of the inflamed area. Although spicy foods are sometimes said to "open" the nose and reduce congestion, in the case of a sore throat, the effect can be the opposite - increasing pain and dryness.

Acidic foods, including citrus fruits, pineapple, pickled vegetables or juices with a high acid content, are also undesirable. They can irritate the mucous membrane of the throat and cause tingling or burning. The same applies to carbonated drinks - carbon dioxide and sweeteners in the composition can increase inflammation.

Sweets, especially those containing a lot of sugar - caramel, chocolate, pastries - are also not the best choice during a sore throat. Excess sugar promotes the growth of bacteria in the oral cavity, which can complicate the course of the disease. In addition, some sweets have a sticky texture, which contributes to sticking to the mucous membrane and additional irritation.

Finally, very hot or very cold foods can worsen the condition. Although many people like hot tea when they have a cold, too high a temperature of the drink can burn an already sore throat. It is also worth refraining from ice cream or cold drinks - a sharp temperature drop can worsen your well-being and provoke a spasm.

Therefore, when you have a sore throat, it is important to take care not only of medical treatment, but also of proper nutrition. By giving up irritating foods for a few days, you can significantly speed up the recovery process and reduce unpleasant symptoms.
