Broccoli against colon cancer: new scientific evidence of the effectiveness of the vegetable

Broccoli, long known for its beneficial properties, has once again found itself in the center of scientific research. This time, the focus is on the potential of this vegetable in the prevention of colon cancer. Researchers from Australia have found that certain compounds found in broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables can significantly reduce the risk of developing this dangerous disease.

Scientists from the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute in Melbourne conducted an experimental study on mice, the results of which were an important breakthrough in understanding the relationship between nutrition and colorectal cancer. According to the study, a protein known as AHR (aryl hydrocarbon receptor), which is activated by substances formed during the digestion of broccoli, plays a key role.

This AHR protein controls the immune response in the intestine and helps maintain a healthy intestinal wall. When mice lacked the AHR protein or were not fed vegetables that stimulate its activation, the risk of developing colon tumors increased significantly. This suggests that vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, and Brussels sprouts may have a protective effect on the gut microbiota and immune system.

The researchers say that these findings could have important implications for cancer prevention in humans. Although the studies have only been conducted in laboratory animals, the mechanism of action of AHR is similar in humans. Accordingly, eating cruciferous vegetables may be an effective and natural strategy for reducing the risk of colorectal cancer, the second most common type of cancer in the world.

The authors of the study emphasize that this is not a panacea. Eating broccoli does not guarantee complete protection against cancer, but it can be an important part of an overall strategy for maintaining a healthy gut. A diet rich in fiber, vegetables, fruits, and low in processed foods has long been recommended by doctors as a means of preventing cancer.

The next step will be to conduct clinical trials with human participants to confirm the effectiveness of these compounds in preventing cancer. However, the results of the work of Australian scientists already prove once again that a healthy diet is crucial for preventing chronic diseases. And broccoli seems to have every chance of taking pride of place among the foods that help fight one of the most dangerous types of cancer.
