Should You Limit Your Egg Consumption: What Scientists Say

Eggs have long been a subject of debate among nutritionists and scientists. On the one hand, they are a valuable source of protein, vitamins, and minerals. On the other hand, due to their high cholesterol content, they are often associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. However, recent scientific studies shed new light on the impact of this product on human health.

It was previously believed that eating a large number of eggs (more than three per week) could negatively affect the state of the cardiovascular system due to the high level of cholesterol in the yolk. But the results of a study published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition showed otherwise. According to an analysis conducted among more than 177 thousand people in 50 countries, moderate egg consumption is not associated with an increased risk of heart disease or mortality.

The study, which lasted for several years, covered different social and economic groups of the population. Scientists have concluded that eating one egg a day does not have a harmful effect on health, even in people with cardiovascular disease or diabetes. Moreover, eggs can be part of a healthy diet, as they contain essential nutrients for the body.

The key factor is a person’s overall diet. If eggs are consumed as part of a balanced diet rich in vegetables, fruits, whole grains and healthy fats, their negative impact is minimal or absent. On the other hand, if the diet consists mainly of processed foods, saturated fats and little vegetable fiber, then even a moderate number of eggs does not compensate for the harmful effects of the overall diet.

The study also notes that eggs are an affordable source of nutrients in low-income countries, where the population has limited access to meat and other protein products. In such conditions, eggs can be an important element in the fight against protein deficiency and vitamin deficiencies, in particular vitamin D and group B.

Thus, scientists concluded: there is no reason to generally limit egg consumption among healthy people. However, it is important to adhere to a balanced diet and take into account the individual characteristics of the body. As with any other product, the main thing is moderation and variety in the diet.
