What awaits us after death? This question has worried humanity for centuries. Modern science cannot give a definitive answer, but numerous testimonies of people who have been in a state of clinical death provide a unique opportunity to look beyond the border. Their experiences have much in common - a feeling of peace, "exiting from the body", tunnels with bright light, meetings with deceased relatives - and at the same time remain deeply personal.

Many of those who have experienced cardiac arrest or clinical death describe such visions. One of the most common descriptions is the feeling that they have left their physical body and are watching what is happening from above. Some claim to have seen medical workers trying to resuscitate them, and were even able to later retell the words that were spoken at that moment. This is of interest to scientists, because such testimonies are difficult to explain from the point of view of traditional medicine.

Another common element is the “tunnel of light.” People describe being “pulled” into a narrow passage filled with a bright, but not blinding, light that evokes feelings of love, safety, and peace. Often, figures would appear at the other end of the tunnel—sometimes long-dead relatives, sometimes unknown beings, radiating warmth and acceptance. In many cases, these “meetings” would end with the words, “Your time has not yet come,” after which the person would “return” to life.

These experiences have a profound effect on those who experience them. Most people report that after returning from clinical death, their attitude toward life changes dramatically. They begin to appreciate each moment more, become less materialistic, more interested in spirituality, and lose their fear of death. Psychologists note that this phenomenon is called a transformation after a near-death experience (NDE).

The scientific community still does not have a consensus on the nature of these visions. Some believe that it is simply the result of biochemical processes in the brain, which is in a state of severe stress or hypoxia (lack of oxygen). Other researchers point to the recurrence of the experience among representatives of different cultures, religions and even atheists, which, in their opinion, indicates something more than a simple physiological reaction of the body. Despite the lack of evidence of life after death, such stories remain an important source for philosophical, religious and scientific reflection. They allow us to look differently at our own existence, at what it means to be alive - and what may await us after our last breath.
