Dry eyes: how to recognize the symptoms and cope with discomfort

Dry eye syndrome is a common ophthalmological disorder in which the surface of the eye is not sufficiently moistened with tear fluid. This can cause irritation, burning, a feeling of sand in the eyes, and in some cases, even temporary blurred vision. There are many causes of this condition: from prolonged exposure to screens to changes in hormonal levels, age-related factors or environmental influences.

One of the main causes of dry eyes is a decrease in the production of tear fluid or a violation of its composition. Normally, a tear consists of an aqueous, mucous and fatty phase. Violation of at least one of these components leads to instability of the tear film. This is often associated with dysfunction of the meibomian glands, which are responsible for the fatty component. In this case, the tear evaporates quickly, and the surface of the eye remains unprotected.

Symptoms of the syndrome may appear gradually or worsen sharply in certain conditions - for example, in dry air, when working with a computer or windy weather. Patients often complain of eye fatigue, sensitivity to light, redness and difficulty wearing contact lenses. Some even experience paradoxical tearing - this is the body's reaction to irritation, when tears are produced, but they are of poor quality.

To reduce discomfort, you should first consult an ophthalmologist. The doctor can conduct tests for the stability of the tear film and assess the function of the meibomian glands. The most common treatment is the use of moisturizing eye drops - artificial tears. It is important to choose products without preservatives, especially with prolonged use. Gels or ointments for night use may also be prescribed.

In addition to drug therapy, doctors recommend paying attention to lifestyle. It is worth limiting the time spent in front of the screen, taking breaks every 20 minutes, using a humidifier in the room and protecting your eyes from the wind with glasses. Proper nutrition also plays an important role: Omega-3 fatty acids, which are found in fish or special supplements, can improve the quality of the tear film. In more complex cases, ophthalmologists may offer additional treatment methods - for example, blocking the lacrimal puncta to reduce tear outflow or heat therapy to improve the functioning of the meibomian glands. Thanks to a comprehensive approach, most patients achieve significant relief of symptoms and an improvement in quality of life.
