The Link Between Height and Cardiovascular Health: What the Science Says

Can our height affect our likelihood of developing cardiovascular disease? This question has long intrigued scientists, and numerous studies have shown that the answer is yes. A person’s height, which is determined by genetic factors, childhood living conditions, and nutrition, can have a significant impact on health risks in adulthood.

Studies show that short stature is associated with a higher risk of developing coronary heart disease. For example, a large meta-analysis that included data from more than 700,000 people found that every 6.5 centimeters shorter increases the risk of cardiovascular disease by about 13%. This link does not mean that short stature itself causes the disease, but it may be a marker for other risk factors.

One explanation is that height may reflect overall health during growth—including access to good nutrition, the absence of chronic childhood infections, and the quality of care. Shorter people, especially those who grew up in less favorable conditions, may have worse cardiovascular or metabolic development. It is also suggested that shorter people have smaller coronary arteries, which may affect their likelihood of blockage.

On the other hand, being taller is not an absolute guarantee of no risk. Some studies suggest the opposite: taller people may be more likely to develop certain types of cancer. This is because having more cells in the body potentially increases the chance of mutations.

However, when it comes to cardiovascular disease—such as heart attacks or angina—the advantage is usually on the side of taller people. This is confirmed by a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, which established a genetic link between short stature and an increased risk of cardiovascular disease.

Despite these statistical links, experts emphasize: height is not a determining factor. It is only one of many. Lifestyle plays a major role in the prevention of heart disease: a healthy diet, physical activity, control of blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar, as well as quitting smoking. Regardless of your height, you can significantly reduce your risks if you follow healthy habits.
