Nutrition for the expectant mother: how diet affects breast milk and the health of the baby

A woman’s nutrition during pregnancy is crucial not only for her own well-being, but also for the development of the unborn child. More and more scientific studies indicate that the quality and composition of the mother’s diet before childbirth can directly affect the composition of breast milk and the health of the baby in the long term.

Breast milk is a unique biological fluid that contains everything necessary for the development of a newborn: proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, as well as immune components that form the baby’s defense system. Despite the fact that a woman’s body is able to maintain the basic composition of milk even in the event of a nutritional deficiency, some nutrients in it still depend on the mother’s diet. For example, the content of omega-3 fatty acids, iodine, vitamins D and B12 is closely related to a woman’s nutrition during pregnancy and lactation.

Lack of these key elements can affect not only the health of the mother, but also the development of the child's brain, nervous system and immunity. Studies show that children whose mothers had a balanced diet with enough healthy fats, proteins and microelements develop better cognitively and physically, have a higher body weight at birth and are less likely to get sick in the first months of life.

It is especially important to ensure adequate intake of iron and folate - these substances reduce the risk of anemia in the mother and congenital malformations in the fetus. Quite often, doctors also advise taking additional prenatal vitamins to compensate for possible gaps in nutrition, especially in cases of vegetarian or vegan diets.

In addition, the mother's diet can also affect the child's taste preferences in the future. It is known that some tastes, such as garlic, vanilla or carrots, are transmitted through breast milk, and the baby can "get acquainted" with them even before the introduction of complementary foods. This, in turn, can facilitate an easier transition to solid foods at 6 months of age.

Therefore, a healthy, varied and balanced diet during pregnancy is crucial for both mother and child. A responsible approach to diet not only supports a woman’s energy, but also lays the foundation for a baby’s lifelong good health.
