Persistent Dry Mouth: Causes, Effects, and Solutions

Dry mouth, or xerostomia, is a fairly common condition that can significantly reduce a person's quality of life. It occurs when the salivary glands do not produce enough saliva to moisten the oral cavity. This symptom can be temporary or chronic and is often accompanied by a burning sensation, difficulty swallowing, bad breath, and a change in taste.

The causes of dry mouth can be very diverse. The most common are the side effects of medications, including antihistamines, antidepressants, painkillers, diuretics, and drugs to lower blood pressure. Certain chronic diseases, such as diabetes, Parkinson's disease, Sjögren's syndrome, HIV/AIDS, or previous strokes, can also lead to xerostomia.

An important factor influencing the development of dry mouth is age. It is much more common in older people, partly because they are more likely to take a lot of medication, but also because the salivary glands naturally decrease in function. Other triggers include smoking, alcohol abuse, stress, and dehydration.

Saliva performs a number of vital functions: it helps digest food, protects teeth from cavities, inhibits the growth of bacteria, and promotes healing of oral tissues. Therefore, its deficiency can lead to a number of complications, including infections, gingivitis, speech disorders, digestive problems, and increased tooth fragility and cavities.

Diagnosis of xerostomia includes a patient interview, an oral examination, and, if necessary, special tests to determine the amount of saliva produced. Treatment depends on the cause: if the dryness is caused by medication, the doctor may change the medication or its dosage. Artificial saliva, special moisturizing gels, lollipops, or drugs that stimulate saliva secretion are also used.

To prevent dry mouth, it is recommended to drink enough water throughout the day, avoid caffeine, alcohol, and tobacco, avoid eating salty or very dry foods, and visit your dentist regularly. If symptoms persist for a long time, you should consult a doctor, as dry mouth can be a sign of serious illness.
