Food Addiction: How to Identify a Problem You Don’t Talk About

In modern society, food addiction is often underestimated, as food is legal, accessible, and necessary for life. However, for some people, the relationship with food goes beyond ordinary consumption and becomes compulsive and obsessive. Food addiction is not just overeating, but a psychological and physiological attachment that can have serious health consequences.

The main signs of food addiction are a loss of control over the amount of food consumed, constant thoughts about food, and eating even when the body does not feel hungry. People suffering from addiction often eat in secret, feel ashamed after overeating, but cannot stop. They may promise themselves to “start a new life on Monday,” but return to the old pattern of behavior again and again.

Food addiction is often associated with an emotional state. People use food to calm down, escape stress, anxiety or depression. Often these are sweets, fatty or high-calorie foods that activate the pleasure center in the brain. Thus, food acts as a “drug” - temporarily improves mood, but in the long term only worsens the situation.

Scientific studies confirm that people with food addiction experience changes in brain function, similar to changes in those suffering from alcoholism or drug addiction. For example, the activity of dopamine receptors in the brain decreases, which is why a person needs more and more food to feel pleasure. This creates a vicious circle: the more food is consumed, the less pleasure it brings.

Another alarming signal is attempts to “compensate” for overeating by fasting, exhausting diets or excessive physical exertion. These fluctuations between binge eating and strict control indicate a destructive relationship with food that can lead to serious eating disorders, such as bulimia or compulsive overeating.

If you notice these symptoms in yourself or someone close to you, it is important to consult a professional: a psychologist, psychotherapist or dietitian who specializes in eating disorders. Food addiction is not a weakness of character, but a real problem that requires a comprehensive approach to treatment. Awareness of the problem is the first step on the path to healing.
