Brisk walking as the key to memory preservation: new facts about dementia prevention in the elderly

With age, the risk of developing dementia, in particular Alzheimer's disease, increases significantly. This is a serious neurodegenerative disease that gradually reduces cognitive functions, memory and the ability to live independently. However, new scientific studies show that even ordinary physical activity, in particular brisk walking, can significantly reduce the likelihood of dementia in the elderly.

Experts have found that regular brisk walking not only improves the general condition of the cardiovascular system, but also stimulates blood circulation in the brain, which helps maintain neural activity. Studies conducted in the USA and Europe have shown that people aged 60+ who walk at an active pace every day have a 30–40% lower risk of developing dementia compared to less active peers.

Researchers emphasize: the effectiveness of walking depends not only on the time spent in motion, but also on the pace. So, the optimal pace is considered to be one at which a person takes about 100 steps per minute. This level of activity allows you to activate metabolism and strengthen brain structures responsible for memory and attention.

Walking in the fresh air is especially useful - in parks, forests or just along city streets. In addition to physical benefits, such walks have a positive effect on the psycho-emotional state, reduce the level of stress, which is also a risk factor for the development of cognitive disorders.

Unlike complex training programs or drug treatment, brisk walking is an affordable and safe way to take care of brain health that does not require special equipment or financial costs. To start, 20–30 minutes a day is enough, gradually increasing the duration to 45–60 minutes.

So, brisk walking is not just a form of physical activity, but a powerful tool for preventing age-related changes in the brain. Implementing this simple habit into everyday life can significantly improve the quality of life of older people and maintain mental clarity for many years to come.
