Alarming trend: the number of drug-addicted teenagers is rapidly increasing in Ukraine

A steady increase in the number of teenagers who use drugs is recorded in Ukraine. According to narcologists, the problem is gaining scale, requiring immediate attention from both the state and society as a whole. What is especially alarming is that the age of first drug use is decreasing: currently the average age of onset is 13–14 years.

Experts note that every year more and more children seek help from specialized medical institutions. For example, in the first half of 2025 alone, 22% more people turned to adolescent drug treatment centers than in the same period last year. In many cases, parents do not even suspect the problem until the situation becomes critical.

The reasons for early involvement in drugs are a number of factors: the availability of psychoactive substances, the influence of social networks, an unfavorable environment, lack of adult control, and lack of psychological support. A special role is played by the popularization of so-called “light” drug addiction among young people through Telegram channels and other platforms, where teenagers can order drugs with almost no obstacles.

Experts emphasize: modern drug products are becoming increasingly dangerous. Synthetic substances are entering the market that cause addiction after just a few uses and have unpredictable consequences for the psyche and body. Since most of these substances are manufactured in an artisanal way, the risk of poisoning and overdose is rapidly increasing.

The Ministry of Health recognizes that currently preventive programs are not working effectively enough. Schools often lack high-quality educational activities aimed at building resilience to drug use. In addition, a national system of psychological support for children at risk has not yet been created.

To stop this alarming trend, a comprehensive approach is needed: strengthening control over drug trafficking, improving parental information, a large-scale educational campaign for young people, and expanding access to free psychological and drug treatment. If measures are not taken now, the country may face a new wave of social problems in the coming years.
