Tongue Condition May Indicate Dangerous Vitamin B12 Deficiency

Vitamin B12 plays a key role in many processes occurring in the human body. Its deficiency can have serious health consequences, in particular, affecting the nervous system, red blood cell production, and brain function. One of the least obvious, but very telling symptoms of a deficiency of this vitamin is changes in the condition of the tongue.

Doctors warn that one of the possible signs of B12 deficiency is the so-called “smooth” tongue. It acquires an unnaturally smooth surface due to the disappearance of papillae — small protrusions that usually cover the tongue. This condition is called glossitis and can be accompanied by pain, burning, or increased sensitivity.

In addition to external changes, people with vitamin B12 deficiency may experience difficulty swallowing or have a burning sensation on the tongue. Glossitis sometimes develops along with other symptoms, such as fatigue, weakness, shortness of breath, memory problems, tingling in the extremities, and loss of appetite.

The main sources of vitamin B12 are animal products: meat, fish, eggs, and dairy products. Therefore, people who follow a strict vegan or vegetarian diet are especially at risk of experiencing a deficiency. Also at risk are the elderly and patients with digestive problems, including those who have impaired absorption of vitamins.

B12 deficiency can be diagnosed with a blood test. Treatment usually involves taking supplements or injections of the vitamin. It is important not to delay treatment, as long-term B12 deficiency can lead to irreversible damage to the nervous system.

Experts advise paying close attention to changes in the condition of the tongue and general well-being. If you notice such symptoms, you should consult a doctor for an examination. Early detection and correction of vitamin B12 deficiency can avoid serious complications.
