The connection between bacteria and insomnia: new discoveries by scientists

Recent medical research has opened new horizons in the study of the connection between the bacteria that live in our bodies and sleep disorders. Scientists have found that certain types of bacteria can significantly increase the risk of developing insomnia, which is one of the most common problems among people around the world.

According to research conducted by an international team of scientists, the state of sleep can be influenced by the composition of the intestinal microbiota, which includes billions of microorganisms that live in our bodies. These bacteria interact with each other and with our body, affecting various functions, including sleep regulation. Problems with the balance of the microbiota can lead to disturbances in the production of neurotransmitters that are responsible for stable sleep.

One of the main findings of the research is that certain types of bacteria, in particular Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes, can affect the levels of serotonin and melatonin in the body. These two neurotransmitters are key to normal sleep. Serotonin, known as the "happiness hormone," also affects our mood and overall well-being, while melatonin directly regulates sleep-wake cycles.

Scientists conducted a series of experiments on laboratory mice, the results of which revealed a clear link between a disruption in the composition of the microbiota and sleep problems. In animals whose microbiota composition was altered, a significant decrease in melatonin levels was observed, which led to difficulty falling asleep and a decrease in sleep quality.

These findings could have important implications for the treatment of insomnia and other sleep disorders. Scientists suggest that correcting the composition of the microbiota using probiotics and other methods could become a new direction in the therapy of insomnia. However, in order for these methods to be effective, additional studies are needed to better understand the mechanisms by which the microbiota affects human sleep.

The importance of gut health in the context of overall well-being cannot be underestimated. Disturbances in the microbiota can have far-reaching consequences not only for sleep, but also for other aspects of health, such as immunity, metabolism and mental health. Therefore, doctors recommend paying attention to proper nutrition and leading a healthy lifestyle to maintain a balance of intestinal microflora. Overall, new research highlights the importance of a comprehensive approach to health that takes into account both physiological and microbiological aspects. This may be an important step towards understanding the causes of insomnia and other sleep disorders, as well as developing effective methods for their treatment.
