Iodine deficiency: a hidden threat to child development and the health of the nation| Здоровье
Iodine deficiency: a hidden threat to child development and the health of the nation Iodine is a trace element that plays a key role in the functioning of the thyroid gland and the overall development of the body. Its deficiency can lead to serious consequences, especially in children, since it is at an early age that the basic physiological and cognitive abilities are formed. Despite the simplicity of prevention, iodine deficiency still remains a common problem in many countries, including Ukraine. One of the most dangerous consequences of iodine deficiency is the delay in mental and physical development in children. Iodine is necessary for the production of thyroid hormones, which regulate metabolism and are responsible for the growth, development of the brain and nervous system. Without a sufficient amount of these hormones, the child's brain cannot fully form, which leads to a decrease in intellectual abilities, memory impairment and learning difficulties. According to WHO, iodine deficiency is the main cause of preventable mental retardation. In regions with low iodine intake, children's IQ is on average 10–15 points lower. In addition, iodine deficiency during pregnancy increases the risk of miscarriage, stillbirth, and congenital malformations. Ukraine is among the regions with moderate iodine deficiency. The main source of this microelement is food, in particular seafood, dairy products, and iodized salt. However, according to recent studies, about 70% of Ukrainians consume insufficient iodine, and the level of coverage of the population with iodized salt does not exceed 30%. Prevention of iodine deficiency is relatively simple and affordable. The most effective method is the mandatory use of iodized salt in the food industry and at the household level. In some countries, this practice is mandatory at the legislative level, which has allowed almost completely eliminating iodine deficiency. Ukraine should also strengthen state policy in this direction. Raising public awareness about the importance of iodine intake, regular screening of children and pregnant women, and supporting iodization programs can significantly reduce health risks. Ensuring adequate iodine intake is an investment in the future: a healthy generation with high intellectual potential.
