Foods that contribute to the development of caries: how nutrition affects dental health| Здоровье
Foods that contribute to the development of caries: how nutrition affects dental health Caries is one of the most common dental problems in the world. Its development is closely related to nutrition and the foods consumed. Some foods can significantly increase the risk of caries, as they contribute to the destruction of tooth enamel and create a favorable environment for the development of bacteria. In this article, we will look at the main foods that can cause caries and explain how they affect dental health. First of all, it is important to note that caries is formed due to a combination of several factors: bacteria living in the oral cavity, sugars and acids that affect the teeth. Sugar, in particular, is the main source of nutrition for bacteria that produce acids that destroy tooth enamel over time. This is why foods high in sugar are among the most dangerous for teeth. Such foods include sweet drinks, including carbonated drinks, sugar-sweetened juices and energy drinks. Not only do they contain a lot of sugar, but they also have a low pH, which makes the environment in the oral cavity acidic, which in turn contributes to the destruction of tooth enamel. Frequent consumption of such drinks can significantly increase the likelihood of developing cavities, so dentists recommend limiting their consumption or replacing them with healthier alternatives, such as water or unsweetened teas. Other harmful products for teeth are sweets, such as candies, cakes, cookies and other baked goods with a lot of sugar and flour. They can linger in the mouth, which gives the bacteria that cause cavities additional time to multiply and produce acids. Caramels and lollipops are especially dangerous, as they can remain on the teeth for a long time, which increases the risk of developing dental problems. In addition, foods that contain a lot of acids, such as citrus fruits (oranges, lemons, grapefruits) and berries, can play an important role in the development of cavities. Although they are good for your overall health because of their vitamins, their high acidity can weaken tooth enamel and make your teeth more vulnerable to decay. If you eat these fruits frequently, it is important to rinse your mouth with water afterwards to neutralize the acid. Another group of foods that can contribute to the development of cavities are various types of dry snacks, such as chips, crackers and bars. They are high in simple carbohydrates, which are quickly broken down in the mouth, turning into sugar. In addition, these foods often remain on the teeth, which creates conditions for bacteria to multiply. Their consumption in combination with liquid nutrition (water or milk) may be less harmful. Alcoholic beverages, especially wine and beer, are no less dangerous. They can cause dry mouth, which reduces the amount of saliva, a natural defense mechanism for teeth. Without enough saliva, teeth become more vulnerable to the development of cavities, as well as to the accumulation of bacteria. Alcohol, especially when mixed with sugary drinks, creates a favorable environment for the development of cavities. To reduce the risk of cavities, it is important to follow a balanced diet that includes more vegetables, fruits, foods high in calcium, as well as to maintain good oral hygiene. Regular brushing, flossing, and visiting the dentist will help keep your teeth healthy and prevent cavities. Ключевые слова:
