The human immunodeficiency virus may hide in the spinal cord

Recent research by Swedish scientists has shown that the spinal cord may serve as a hidden haven for the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Scientists from Sahlgrenska Academy analyzed the cerebrospinal fluid of 15 patients and found that in some of them, the virus was present in the fluid, not the blood.

This discovery explains why HIV is difficult to completely eradicate even with long-term antiretroviral therapy. The brain and spinal cord act as a reservoir where the virus can persist in a latent form, remaining inaccessible to most drugs.

The complexity of treatment is compounded by the presence of the so-called blood-brain barrier. This natural defense mechanism prevents many drugs from penetrating nervous tissue, making standard therapy less effective.

The researchers note that the presence of such hidden viral pockets is the cause of relapses of infection after treatment is discontinued. Even with normal blood counts, the virus can persist in the spinal cord, maintaining a latent infection.

Therefore, scientists emphasize the need to develop new drugs that can penetrate the spinal cord barrier and target the virus in its "safe haven." Such drugs may be the key to long-awaited complete infection control.

In addition to pharmacological studies, specialists recommend continuing regular patient monitoring and considering latent viral remnants when planning treatment regimens. Understanding where HIV resides opens up new opportunities to combat this dangerous infection.
