The Dangers of a Chronic Runny Nose

At first glance, a runny nose seems like a completely harmless ailment experienced by almost everyone. However, prolonged nasal congestion and accompanying fatigue can signal more serious problems. Ignoring these symptoms can lead to the development of chronic inflammation in the sinuses.

Sinusitis is one of the most common complications of a runny nose. In its early stages, it can masquerade as a common cold: nasal congestion, mild headaches, and a general feeling of discomfort appear. Without prompt treatment, the inflammation can become chronic, causing persistent headaches, weakness, and a deterioration in quality of life.

Particular attention should be paid to pregnant women. Hormonal changes during pregnancy can increase swelling of the mucous membranes, increasing the risk of sinusitis. In such cases, self-medication is unacceptable – only a specialist can prescribe safe therapy that will not harm the expectant mother or child.

Chronic rhinitis can also be associated with allergic reactions, immune system disorders, or anatomical features of the nasal passages. Therefore, it's important to go beyond simple nasal drops and rinses and undergo a full examination by an otolaryngologist.

Modern diagnostic methods allow for the detection of inflammation in the earliest stages. The doctor may order an X-ray or CT scan of the sinuses and develop a personalized treatment plan, ranging from conservative therapy to minimally invasive procedures.

Ignoring the symptoms of a runny nose can lead to serious consequences, such as chronic sinusitis, poor sleep, and poor overall health. Therefore, it's important to treat prolonged nasal congestion as a signal from the body and promptly consult a specialist for effective and safe treatment.
