How Stress Affects Reproductive Health
Psychological stress and tension have a much more serious impact on the body than just a temporary deterioration in well-being. Modern research shows that chronic stress can contribute to reproductive problems and even lead to infertility. Scientists attribute this to hormonal imbalances caused by prolonged exposure to stress factors. Stress causes the body to sharply increase levels of glucocorticoids—hormones that regulate responses to external stimuli. The most important of these is cortisol, which, when persistently elevated, blocks the production of gonadotropin, a key sex hormone that influences ovulation in women and sperm production in men. As a result, not only fertility but also sexual desire decreases. Recent research has identified another important mechanism: stress increases the levels of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnIH), a hormone that suppresses the reproductive system. The RFRP protein, which is associated with this inhibitor, inhibits the production of sex hormones, thereby contributing to decreased reproductive function and increasing the risk of infertility. These findings are based on animal experiments—laboratory rats and birds—which demonstrated that GnIH plays a significant role in regulating reproductive processes in mammals, including humans. These discoveries shed light on the molecular mechanisms through which stress affects health and fertility. Medical experts emphasize that men and women experiencing chronic stress significantly reduce their chances of successful conception not only due to hormonal imbalances but also due to deteriorating general health and decreased libido. Therefore, stress management is becoming an important part of the prevention and treatment of reproductive disorders. Thus, stress is not simply a psychological problem, but a factor capable of fundamentally altering the body's biochemistry and affecting the health of future generations. Ensuring emotional balance and creating conditions to reduce stress are important steps towards maintaining and improving reproductive health. Ключевые слова:
