Counting Money as a Way to Reduce Pain

A recent study by American scientists from Minnesota revealed an unusual link between counting money and pain perception. The experiment involved student volunteers who were divided into two groups. One group was asked to count regular strips of paper, while the other was asked to count hundred-dollar bills.

After completing the task, the participants dipped their hands in hot water and kept them there for as long as possible. The results showed that the students who counted real money tolerated the pain significantly longer than their peers in the control group.

The scientists attribute this effect to increased self-esteem. Working with real bills evokes a sense of control and confidence, which in turn reduces the perception of discomfort and pain.

Furthermore, the participants who counted money experienced increased levels of endorphins—hormones that act as natural painkillers. These substances help the body cope with physical stress and improve mood.

The results of the experiment suggest that simple actions involving physical contact with money can have a therapeutic effect. This method, of course, does not replace medical treatments, but can be used as an additional strategy for pain reduction.

Thus, counting money turned out to be not only a practical skill but also an unusual tool for increasing pain tolerance and improving psychological well-being.
