The Internet's Impact on the Brain and Memory
Modern life is impossible without the internet, but its active use can have a negative impact on brain function. American scientists note that constant exposure to information overloads attention and memory, leading to mental exhaustion. The brain receives a huge number of signals that it must respond to even when overloaded. This constant stimulation puts the brain in a "fight or flight" state, accompanied by the release of the stress hormone cortisol. Even short periods of exposure to a stressful environment, such as a busy street or constantly browsing online news, can reduce concentration. This gradually affects the ability to think long-term and in-depth. The internet particularly affects short-term memory and quick decision-making. Neurosurgical research shows that while working online, the areas of the brain responsible for immediate information processing are activated, but the deeper areas responsible for analyzing complex and fundamental issues remain underdeveloped. As a result, a person loses the ability to think systematically. Furthermore, constantly switching between tasks online creates a habit of superficial information processing. People become accustomed to rapidly changing content, which reduces their concentration on a single task and makes it difficult to absorb complex knowledge. Long-term consequences include difficulties with planning, analysis, and making informed decisions. On the other hand, research shows that regular mental exercises, such as crosswords and puzzles, help maintain cognitive function. However, there is a caveat: with aging, the speed and quality of information processing still decline, and overuse of fast-paced digital stimuli can accelerate this process. The scientists' conclusion is clear: the internet is convenient and useful, but excessive use carries risks for memory, concentration, and deep thinking. To minimize the negative impact, it is important to alternate online work with real-world brain exercises, walks, and focused attention on a single task. Ключевые слова:
