Diet and Lifestyle for Diabetes

Diet is a crucial part of treatment for diabetes, especially type 2 diabetes. Maintaining a healthy diet helps control blood glucose levels, normalize metabolism, and reduce the need for medications. With the right approach, patients can lead an active life without complications and maintain stable health.

The main goal of nutrition for diabetes is to maintain normal blood sugar levels and proper carbohydrate and fat metabolism. The diet should be balanced and include sufficient protein, vitamins, and minerals. Eating five small meals a day is optimal—the last meal should be three hours before bedtime.

It is recommended to include lean meats and poultry, steamed, baked, or boiled, trimming visible fat. Lean fish, low-fat dairy products, scrambled eggs, and hard cheeses are also beneficial. Unsweetened vegetables and salads are an important part of the diet, while fruits and berries should be low in sugar.

Butter should be limited to 40 grams per day, bread to no more than 200 grams, and fluid intake to 1.5–2 liters per day, including water, tea, and compotes made with sweeteners. Table salt should not exceed 5 grams per day. Consuming sweets, honey, baked goods, alcohol, fatty meats and fish, sauces, fast food, and processed foods is prohibited.

In addition to proper nutrition, regular physical activity is essential for diabetics. It improves metabolism, lowers blood sugar levels, and supports cardiovascular health. The minimum recommended activity is 1.5 hours of walking outdoors daily, with exercise regimens individually tailored to the individual by a doctor.

Following all dietary and lifestyle recommendations helps achieve disease management, maintain health, and lead a full, active life. Patients who perceive diet and physical activity as a habit, rather than deprivation, achieve stable blood sugar levels and a reduced risk of complications.
